As the weather warms up, we tend to spend more time outdoors, and with that will come sun exposure. It's important to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sun rays and UV radiation by applying sunscreen daily. But before you slather your favorite sunscreen on your skin, make sure to check if it's part of the voluntary recall affecting the industry this summer.

Recently, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. voluntarily recalled all lots of five NEUTROGENA® and AVEENO® aerosol sunscreen product lines to the consumer level. The recall comes after internal laboratory tests identified levels of the human carcinogen known as benzene in some samples of these sunscreen products.

While benzene is not a listed ingredient in any of the company's sunscreen products, low levels of the chemical were found in some samples of their aerosol sunscreen products. The company has launched an investigation into the cause of the issue, but with a recall of this magnitude, it's hard to imagine they will be able to retain full customer loyalty and trust.

What Is Benzene?

Benzene has been classified as a human carcinogen, meaning it may cause cancer if exposure is high enough. This chemical is found nearly everywhere in nature, with most humans experiencing daily exposure at varying degrees from multiple sources indoors and outdoors. It can be absorbed by inhalation, orally, or through the skin, which is why the recall was a necessary step by Johnson & Johnson.

It should be noted that, based on research and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, daily exposure to benzene levels detected in these sunscreen products is not expected to cause adverse health consequences. As the company states, the recall is being done out of an abundance of caution.
