Thanks in no small part to a tremendous increase in consumer awareness, “all natural” has taken on a whole new meaning in suncare.
Throughout the cosmetic industry, there has been tremendous recent growth in everything “all natural”. There is no question that “chemical-free” products carry a certain mass appeal. In the world of suncare however, the term “all natural” has grown increasingly important.
Unlike any other industry, “all-natural” means more then just the source of a product in sunscreens. ALL-NATURAL in a sunscreen can mean crucial difference in performance and protection.
Simply put, traditional chemical sunscreens (such as Octinoxate and Oxybenzone) provide excellent protection from UVB rays. These are the ultra-violet rats that cause sunburn – the rays that turn the skin red. The do not however protect the skin from UVA rays… and that is where protection can be crucial, in fact, a matter of life and death.
It is the UVA rays that the Food and Drug Administration has determined is the cause of skin cancer due to exposure from the sun. What protects you from UVA radiation? The natural/mineral sunscreens like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.
This is also known as “broad spectrum” protection. Under the new FDA sunscreen regulations, a product must now test for broad-spectrum protection in order to make the claim that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. On top of that additional required testing, the FDA has also mandated that products not meeting broad spectrum parameters must begin to carry a warning stating that they strictly protect against sunburn, and do not protect against skin cancer caused by the sun.
